A number of discussions ensued after a two and a half hour log keynote with listeners keen to enquire about the time that had elapsed to reach that moment of ‘clarity’ – what I refer to as ‘Ding!’. The reality it has taken over ten years thus far of appreciative inquiry about self, not always easy and requiring a lot of hard questions to be asked of yourself. Unless you’re prepared to deal with those issues, you may never achieve that ‘aha’ moment as you will continue to be in your own way.
Having clarity about ‘who you are’ determines many things: –
- What you stand for.
- How you spend your time.
- Who matters.
- What to say no to.
- What to say yes to.
- What your bias is.
- When you’re not yourself.
- How to re-set to your desired state.
- What your moral compass is.
- What your real reason for being is.
That’s just a starter for 10. In reality it also means that you become more conscious and awake to opportunity, what I call ‘Opportunity Engineering’. That optimum moment of flow when serendipity and synchronicity conspire to put people and situations in a new light.
Relating this to Leadership, it leads to absolute clarity as to what type of person you are and to dial down any ‘work mask’ you may have, eventually eliminating it as you become one single source of the truth about who you are and what you stand for. Then – you can work harder at being yourself, which delivers a lot of contentment and happiness in the long term. At that point, you’ll be surprised by what happens and how far you can go in generating authentic relationships in all walks of life. It will all mirror back to you.
My friend and advisor – David Yeoman – has a great one line saying – “If you don’t go within, you go without” – it ultimately boils down to that, so get the kettle on!
